The Town of Black Diamond, Alberta
is located 52 km (32 mi) southwest of Calgary
in the majestic foothills of the Rocky
Mountains. A variety of outdoor attractions beckon visitors to enjoy the natural
beauty of the area, including the Friendship
Trail, which links the community to its sister town, Turner Valley. History
buffs will enjoy learning about the rich and colourful history of oil exploration
and development in the area at the Turner
Valley Gas Plant, just outside town. This region of Canada
is known for its unpredictable weather, given the proximity to the Rocky Mountains.
Often in the dead of a brutal winter, Chinook winds blow through the Foothills,
driving the thermometer upwards and providing much needed relief. In the spring
and fall, local ranchers may be seen driving
their cattle along the scenic roads, modern evidence of the area's rich agricultural
heritage. Flyfishers will enjoy the pristine beauty of the Sheep
River nearby, while aquatic buffs may enjoy the facilities at the Dr.
Lander Memorial Pool. For those seeking modern culture, the Terra
Cotta Gallery carries an eclectic mix of artists, and a variety of quaint
restaurants and shops may be found on the main street.
