In Mehra's uncommon shrine to her own loss, she asks, How do we come to know violence? There is an implied relationship here — that we might actually be identified, that to know is fathomable, or even that one person's violence is universal. The set up is an uphill battle, just as it should be. There are so few days in this life and each one is never the same as before.

The New Gallery is pleased to present “Milan New Mexico” by Frederic Bigras-Burrogano at our +15 Window in Arts Commons (205 8 Ave SE).

The exhibition runs from September 25 to November 25, 2016, with a closing reception on Thursday, November 17 at 6:00 PM. The reception will be followed by drinks at the The Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club (109 7 St SW) from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. All TNG reception guests will receive 15% off their bill when they present the exhibition postcard. Admission is free and all are welcome.
___

“Milan New Mexico” is an ongoing series that explores the phenomenon of North American towns that are named using the borrowed names from other cities of the world. This project uses photography, research and mapping to explore the connection between these new cities, as well as their relationship with preconceived notions concerning their esthetic, North American culture and biculturalism.

As a Canadian-Italian, Bigras-Burrogano interrogates his own sense of belonging and bicultural identity in this body of work. These towns can be seen as a metaphor for the children of immigrants. There is a parallel between how we perceive these individuals and our expectations of these towns. Similarly this project examines how we expect and project certain cultural elements based on their provenance.

Influenced by the works of Joel Sternfield, Alec Soth and Stephen Shore, these images serve as a way to explore North American culture and a sense of longing and nostalgia. Using road trips to produce the images – a definitive symbol of our continental culture – to re-examine our relationship to the land, its architecture and ethos of where we live. How did these hundreds of towns appear all across North America? What connection can be drawn between these cities? How are expectations of specific cultures shaped? How does this play in a broader sense of stereotyping visual cultural identity? How do these images shape our understanding of North American spaces?

The Kinkonauts return to the Cardel Theatre to join the 2016 YYComedy Festival for a night of improvised comedy, joined with Calgary favourites Ben Cannon and Jeff Kubik. The Kinkonauts will trade in their jeans for Elizabethan short pants and create an improvised Shakespeare play on-the-spot, based on an audience suggestion.

Tickets $15, available at www.yycomedy.ca/tickets/kinkonauts

The Kinkonauts are Calgary's Improv Lab: a longform improvisational troupe dedicated to creating emotional, grotesque and profound play-skits and make-em-ups.

YYComedy began as the inspired vision of festival founder Cory Mack back in October of 2011. The goals of the festival have always remained the same - to present the highest quality shows possible at affordable prices, to include every aspect of the city's comedy community and present opportunities for locals to share the stage with some of the top performers in the business - the end result being a heightening of Calgary's comedic stature regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Off we go on the tractor-pulled hay wagon, rolling through the crunchy fall leaves just hoping to find some... kid-sized pumpkins! Once we find some, we'll bring them back and decorate them into creative pumpkin-head masterpieces! While the glue sets up, everyone can have a visit with their favorite animal friends in the farmyard. It's harvest fun at it's best! This makes one of those 'parties to remember'! And of course, all the children have their wonderful pumpkin to take home!
Be sure to dress for the weather and bring along the camera to catch the expressions of delight and discovery!
And... wear something orange to celebrate the spectacular fall season!

Timing?? ....the hunt and decorating usually take 40 - 50 minutes, and then whatever time you'd like to spend in the farmyard.....we see most folks spend 1.5 to 2 hours with us. You must be here at least 15 minutes before your hunt so we have everyone together so the hunts can run on time.

Now, cutting is one of the world’s fastest growing equine sports with competitions all over North America. In fact, the Calgary Stampede Cutting Horse Futurity presented by Wrangler is one of the highest profile events. From October 10 through 14 the top open and non-professional riders will be in Calgary with their horses in tow. The focus of the event are the Futurity classes – those limited to 3 year old horses – and includes high level competitions for all ages of horses as they advance through their training. It’s an exciting time as these equine athletes show their skills and riders compete for more than $300,000 in cash and awards.

A Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground:
The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle.

RSVP by October 23, 2015 to njmackie@ucalgary.ca

On October 31, 1944, the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade was ordered to force a crossing over the Walcheren Causeway and establish a foothold on the eastern flank of Walcheren Island. Only 40 yards wide and stretching 1,200 yards with sodden reed-grown mudflats on either side the causeway was a deadly killing ground. An attempted advance up the gunbarrel straight causeway by the Black Watch was shredded. On the night of October 31, the Calgary Highlanders stepped out into the open in a valiant effort that won a shallow bridgehead on the far end that the Germans fiercely counterattacked throughout the ensuing day. Author Mark Zuehlke’s 2015 Ross Ellis Memorial Lecture, A Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground: The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle, pays tribute to the regiment’s gallantry and also the key role that Major Ross Ellis played in this battle.

"Movement is the medicine, the meditation and the metaphor".

On Friday night, we turn the lights down low and invite the inner dancer to move to the grooves mindfully mixed for a dynamic practice, to both workout and meditate in the same breath.

All levels, no formalities. No rules.

Come to practice being in your body - for most of us who over-think, analyze, process, and live in our minds, this is the one night a week the music takes over. Simply shuffle your feet, sway your hips, rock your head - the dance will take over.

Once the music gently comes to a stop, you'll feel like a new person filled with positive energy.

Inspired by the infamous dance classes of Bali, where 100's of bare souled travelers gather each week on a thundering bamboo dance floor, snug in the jungle! A powerful medicine we are thrilled to share with you.

Share this event with your friends and family, co-workers and visiting aunt. All ages.

See you on the dance floor!

This hilarious battle of wits is based on true events. The year is 1979, and our hero is Prime Minister Joe Clark: young, idealistic, and stubborn. He's in his office, deciding if he should put his first budget before Parliament. He knows that if he does he could lose everything. Everyone begs him not to do it: his wife, his colleagues… Brian Mulroney, Pierre Trudeau... They tell him he should pull some strings, make some deals. Compromise.
But like we said, he's stubborn.
This sparkling and rowdy political comedy is a hugely relevant debate about leadership and power.

Event Description

It happened to all of us. We encounter our public safety personnel, but usually in a negative environment. As a result it is very easy to find ourselves keeping distance from them unless we really need them. Let's change this all around and celebrate their altruism, dedication and their extraordinary efforts to serve and stay connected to their community.

Intercultural Dialogue Institute (IDI) Calgary, presents the 3rd Annual Public Heroes Awards in partnership with:

•Calgary Police Service
•Calgary Fire Department
•Public Safety Communications (911 Call Centre)
•Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA)
•Alberta Health EMS
•Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

Anyone can nominate a public servant to Public Heroes Awards. (Deadline is March 20, 2016). You can attend the event for free if you nominate a person.

Dean Jackie Seippert (Faculty of Social Work, UofC) will present the keynote speech on this year’s theme: “Community Partnership in Public Service”

Check out our last editions:

First Public Heroes Awards Ceremony

Second Public Heroes Awards Ceremony.

We want this Ceremony to be accessible to all Calgarians truly interested in our mission.

We don’t want to exclude anyone who can’t afford a $30 dinner ticket.

This timed trial challenges handlers and their stock dogs to move three sheep through a defined course and into a pen, in the fastest time. Keeping the sheep under control and on course can save valuable seconds.
The handler controls the dog, either through whistle or voice commands. The handler must stay in the circle until all the sheep have come through the chute. Time stops when all the sheep are in the pen and the gate is closed.
