8:00pm every FIRST Saturday of the month from Oct 2016-Apr 2017

One Lions explores the metaphorical and metaphysical spaces that exist in all relationships. To put it another way, we take a dangerous longform improv journey. Like going on safari with ground beef in the trunk.

Tickets $10/$5 students, cash only at the door. The Kinkonauts Lab is located on the 2nd floor of the former Movie Poster Shop building (with King Kong). Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building.

Stephen Kent and Covy Holland, along with pianist Eric Nyland, create a harrowing story from a simple audience suggestion. The story moves backwards and forwards in time. Along the way creatures come out to play. Talking tigers, cheerleaders, pilots, Dr. Giraffe, Tommy Antelope Esq., your mother and your father. It’s your story we’re telling, if your story was directed by Wes Anderson and scored by the ghost of Chopin, the SCARY GHOST OF CHOPIN!

What do you do when all the money is gone? When there's no jobs in sight, the family home still isn't paid off and the bills just keep coming, how can one survive in a society that requires capital? When Rollie and Daphne Waters are faced with just such a situation, they decide it is time to get creative…and a little risqué. Okay, a lot risqué. But it would be fairly easy, after all, their friend Alex has a camera, he’s a professional cameraman and he just lost his job too! Daphne is a writer, Rollie can get the costumes…it’s a cash cow! And besides, it’s not like the designer dress can be returned, so what choice do they have, really? It could be romantic, really—a young love story, with Italian bakeries and nine grain baguettes! Come enjoy a laugh with us in these troubling economic times, it’s in the stars!

In honour of Canada’s 150th year, we are presenting this comedy by renowned Canadian playwright Norm Foster.

Scorpio Theatre proudly presents celebrated Canadian playwright George F. Walker's Zastrozzi: Master of Discipline!

Zastrozzi is a man at the height of his power. Physically, spiritually, intellectually, he is the master criminal of all Europe and he stands poised to bring society to its knees before him. Yet rumours circulate that Zastrozzi has been neutralized, that the world is safe from him because he has become consumed by a singular, more personal ambition: Revenge. How far will one man go and how much carnage will he rain upon his own works to finally achieve his revenge? George F. Walker's sweeping epic brings us to a time and a place unlike any you'll see on stage this year. Directed by Keith Kollee, the mastermind of Scorpio Theatre's smash hit "Reservoir Dogs."

Blessed with breathtaking landscapes and abundant natural resources, the South American country of Venezuela has also become renowned in recent years as the home to uniquely beautiful women celebrated in international beauty pageants. Indeed, Venezuela has claimed title to more global beauty competitions than any other nation in the world, successfully taking 6 Miss Universe, 6 Miss World, and 5 Miss International crowns.

The success of Venezuela’s pageant stars on the world stage has instilled an immense sense of national pride, while spawning an all-consuming obsession with physical appearance, and a desire by millions of Venezuelan girls to be a Miss.

Yet behind the glamor and fame that accompanies the pageants, there lies a more sobering portrait of what it means to be a woman in this Caribbean nation.

While millions of dollars are pumped every year into countless local and regional beauty contests and the powerful media interests that drive the industry forward invest massive resources in instilling the image of Miss Venezuela in the minds of young girls, essential services for women in the country are severely lacking, domestic violence is rampant, teen pregnancy is staggering, and deaths resulting from botched cosmetic surgeries are commonplace.

To be a Miss is a feature-length documentary journey that takes the viewer through the inner workings of Venezuela’s beauty factory, exploring the hopes and dreams of young models as they strive to become the next Miss Venezuela. Following three central protagonists, the film exposes the risks and rewards associated with this multi-billion dollar industry while showing how nationalism, personal ambition, and the influence of mass media have transformed the lives of ordinary women in the country.

“The Venezuelan people’s first experience with democracy came about through a beauty contest. In this Latin American country, which was still a dictatorship in the 1950s, it was a novelty for a working-class beauty queen to beat a rival from the elite. Now, beauty contests are big business in Venezuela. To Be a Miss showcases the coaches, agencies, plastic surgeons and even a manufacturer of the hotly contested beauty queens’ crowns. But above all we see the young women trying to escape the poverty of everyday life by competing in beauty contests. In a small room shared by two sisters and a cousin, a Barbie doll hangs like a trophy on the wall. This is the sisters’ goal: to achieve the Barbie look. They go to the gym twice a day, eat far too little and take part in countless competitions. The success of Venezuelan women in international beauty pageants encourages them to hope for a better future. Nevertheless, there are also critical voices from the university – not surprising when we see the preliminary rounds of a contest being held in a plastic surgery practice.” – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam

A film by film by Edward Ellis, Aaron Woolf and Flor Salcedo.

30 minutes Skype Q&A with director Edward Ellis to follow the screening.

Admission is free for students with ID, and for the community with donation (cash or non-perishable foods) to the food bank.

Each year the Marda Loop Justice Film Festival strives to present innovative and meaningful documentaries that encourage Calgarians to take positive action in their communities, this nation, and the world.
’Shadow World' is a cinematic documentary that reveals the shocking realities of the global arms trade - the only business that counts its profits in billions and its losses in human lives. Through the insights of whistleblowers, investigators, prosecutors, military and industry insiders. 'Shadow World' reveals how the international trade in weapons – with the complicity of governments, their militaries and intelligence agencies, defence contractors, arms dealers and agents – fosters corruption, determines economic and foreign policies, undermines democracies and creates widespread suffering.
Ultimately 'Shadow World' reveals the real costs of war, the way the arms trade drives it, how weapons of war are turned against citizens of liberal democracies and how the trade inhibits rather than enhances security for us all. In shedding light on how our realities are being constructed, the film offers a way for audiences to see through this horror, in the hopes of creating a better future.

1979
By Michael Healey
Directed by Miles Potter
This hilarious battle of wits is based on true events. The year is 1979, and our hero is Prime Minister Joe Clark: young, idealistic, and stubborn. He's in his office, deciding if he should put his first budget before Parliament. He knows that if he does he could lose everything. Everyone begs him not to do it: his wife, his colleagues… Brian Mulroney, Pierre Trudeau... They tell him he should pull some strings, make some deals. Compromise.
But like we said, he's stubborn.
This sparkling and rowdy political comedy is a hugely relevant debate about leadership and power.

Event Description

It happened to all of us. We encounter our public safety personnel, but usually in a negative environment. As a result it is very easy to find ourselves keeping distance from them unless we really need them. Let's change this all around and celebrate their altruism, dedication and their extraordinary efforts to serve and stay connected to their community.

Intercultural Dialogue Institute (IDI) Calgary, presents the 3rd Annual Public Heroes Awards in partnership with:

•Calgary Police Service
•Calgary Fire Department
•Public Safety Communications (911 Call Centre)
•Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA)
•Alberta Health EMS
•Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)

Anyone can nominate a public servant to Public Heroes Awards. (Deadline is March 20, 2016). You can attend the event for free if you nominate a person.

Dean Jackie Seippert (Faculty of Social Work, UofC) will present the keynote speech on this year’s theme: “Community Partnership in Public Service”

Check out our last editions:

First Public Heroes Awards Ceremony

Second Public Heroes Awards Ceremony.

We want this Ceremony to be accessible to all Calgarians truly interested in our mission.

We don’t want to exclude anyone who can’t afford a $30 dinner ticket.

Please contact 403.401.3636 or muradov@idialogue.ca to attend.

Love. So beautiful. So musical. So complicated. Although forbidden by fairy law, Iolanthe marries a mortal and is then banished from fairyland. Here in our human world, she bears a son; a lovely lad named Strephon, who falls head over heels and wants to marry Phyllis, who is, of course, desired by all the members of the House of Peers. When Phyllis sees Strephon embrace Iolanthe, who is ethereal and lovely, she doesn’t stop for one moment to consider she might be Strephon’s mother and sets in motion a musical clash between politicians and fairies, sending everyone tripping hither, tripping thither – we did mention love can be complicated – it’s an energetic, satirical journey to the finale. Off and away to get your tickets! We’ll see you in Spring for this, the seventh of fourteen collaborations by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

We live in a world in which information is everywhere but facts are unclear, in which opinions are rampant but context is missing. How do we filter the din around us and focus on the trends and patterns that will reveal what is truly at issue? And once we have, how do we respond to those signals? These are the questions we’ll examine.

Paddle Canada's Waterwalker Film Festival is a tribute to the late Bill Mason, the great conservationist, canoeist and filmmaker. Mason once stated, "The medium of film is for me a means of expressing my love and enjoyment of the natural world, and of sharing my concern for what's happening to it with anybody who looks and listens."

Mason's idea of success was to be able to communicate through his films, books and paintings the intense feelings he had for his surroundings, and to somehow inspire others into sharing and adopting these thoughts and concerns.

Passionate in his beliefs, always speaking from the heart, his films inspired many people to dedicate themselves to the enjoyment and conservation of Canada's wilderness and waterways.

The Calgary Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada is presenting its annual Gutsy Walk.
The goal is to raise money for research and to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which together are known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Approximately 1 in 160 Canadians are affected by IBD. Canada is believed to have one of the highest rates of IBD in the world. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common forms of IBD. Crohn’s disease involves inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract, while ulcerative colitis involves only the large bowel. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both chronic illnesses. They are painful, and can be socially isolating due to the "embarrassment factor".

It is with great pleasure that we, Tania and Vishal Malpuria of SPARQ PRODUCTIONS, invite you to their 7th Annual ONE – POWER OF WORLD DANCE to be held at the GREY EAGLE EVENT CENTRE on June 11th, 2016 starting at 7pm. Part proceeds to benefit the CANADIAN TRANSPLANT ASSOCIATION in support of Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness. This invitation is extended on behalf of all the outstanding performers who have come together to support this endeavor.

This year's event is very special to us. We have an important story to tell. On the day of last year's edition of ONE, May 23rd 2015, Vishal Malpuria, co-director of SPARQ PRODUCTIONS had a neuro stroke. With his already deteriorating heart, things started spirally downwards. He was put on the Transplant list and on Sept 27th 2015, our family was blessed with an angel donating his heart!!! The support to the CANADIAN TRANSPLANT ASSOCIATION is undoubtedly a choice that we have made for life, goiing forward. ORGAN & TISSUE DONATION SAVES LIVES and we need to get this awareness out there. Our humble request is to please share this event and make this a roaring success.

ONE – POWER OF WORLD DANCE promises an immense array of dynamic and visually stunning performances from some of ALBERTA’s most accomplished and promising artists. This exciting and unique presentation will showcase dances of Chinese Folk, Hip hop, Bollywood, Aerialists, Contemporary, Belly Dancing, Salsa and many more. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the performances of this evening will piece together seamlessly, all the while portraying a beautiful relationship between and amongst different genres and cultures. This unique show full of fascinating works of integrated dance forms will provide an opportunity for audiences to extend their horizons beyond the boundaries of their own culture and experience other cultures of the world.

SPARQ PRODUCTIONS is committed to professional artistic excellence through public performances and is working hard to raise the profile of integrated dance within the community, thus trying to provide dance opportunities for local artists.

In this endeavor to promote diversity and community involvement, Tania & Vish, are PROUD to donate part proceeds of this event to the CANADIAN TRANSPLANT ASSOCIATION in support of Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness.

COME EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF WORLD DANCE!!!!

If you are a vendor who wants to participate, please register online at www.ev-na.com

Our vision for the EV Street Fair is to grow with the community and become East Village’s premier event proving a rich and vibrant experience for all Calgarians.

We are confident that once again the East Village will be the urban downtown community it once was and will create a healthy environment for its residents and business owners.

Cyclepalooza is a volunteer-directed, community-based, bicycle-themed festival promoting arts, culture, events, and fun in Calgary. It was formed out of the desire among Calgary area cyclists to bring more publicity and interest to cycling and its positive impacts on communities, and to bring communities together through cycling.

Inspired by Portland’s Pedalpalooza and Vancouver’s Velopalooza, Cyclepalooza is 10 days of bike events and fun that occurs June 23rd to July 2nd.

Cyclepalooza operates on the same organizational model as Pedalpalooza and Velopalooza: A small committee of volunteers provides publicity and organizational support (and a couple of organized events). For the most part, however, the festival is run by individuals, groups, and businesses, who organize their own events. The Cyclepalooza calendar serves to advertise these events, and the Cyclepalooza committee and volunteer force promote the festival as a whole and assist with individual events. There aren’t that many of us, though, and no-one gets paid to do it. So initiative and engagement are welcome! Everyone can host an event, and you don’t need permission or approval to contribute an event to Cyclepalooza. See the Ride Guide for some suggestions on how to go about organizing an event, then add it to the calendar.
