Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sport
Sep 03 to Sep 04
Friday, April 30, 2010 to Saturday, September 4, 2010

Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sport
Artists: Matthew Barney, Mark Bradford, Marcelino Gonçalves, Lyle Ashton Harris, Brian Jungen, Kurt Kauper, Shaun El C. Leonardo, Kori Newkirk, Catherine Opie, Paul Pfeiffer, Marco Rios, Collier Schorr, Joe Sola, Sam Taylor-Wood, Hank Willis Thomas
Curator: Christopher Bedford
Medium: Mixed Media
Gallery: All

Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports, is an exhibition about contemporary art that deals with the subject of the male athlete. This particular artistic theme has become increasingly prevalent during the past several years, building upon several decades of discourse about identity and gender. Including artists ranging from such well-known individuals as Matthew Barney, Catherine Opie, Collier Schorr, and Sam Taylor-Wood to emerging talents such as Shaun El C. Leonardo and Joe Sola, Mixed Signals demonstrates that the male athlete is a far more ambiguous, polyvalent figure in our collective cultural imagination than ever before.

/Kristine Thoreson - Rural Roots
Sep 03 to Sep 30
/STRIDE +15 WINDOW
EPCOR CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, 205 8 AVENUE SOUTHEAST

/EXHIBITION AUGUST & SEPTEMBER 2010.

/RECEPTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2010. 7PM - 8PM.

/DETAILS
This photographic blog project explores the idea of blurred boundaries and reflects the nature of my own identity as the product of both rural and urban influences. Restless and sometimes fearful in the city, yet overwhelmed by feelings of isolation in rural areas, I often feel unsettled in my own hometown. This past spring, I repeatedly traveled to the “borderlands” of Calgary to explore regions where rural and urban living seem to overlap. With this project, my goal is to inspire conversation around the idea of borderlands in Calgary and elsewhere, and to invite conversation about notions of identity, roots and “home.”

http://ruralrootsperspective.blogspot.com

Kristine Thoreson is a photography-based visual artist and post-secondary instructor based in Calgary, Alberta. As a Western Canadian artist her work is about constructing and deconstructing narratives of personal and cultural identity, and exploring emotional attachments to place.

Battleship Down
Sep 03 to Sep 29
TRUCK Contemporary Art presents:

Battleship Down

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Randy Niessen (Calgary, AB)

Randy Niessen’s site specific installations are formal explorations created through a hybrid of painting, print media, and sculpture. These installations play with the tension between art and environment, materials and space, as well as reality and illusion. In the abstract of a sinking ship, Battleship Down is an explosive scene of geometric shapes and colour. Fire, water, and light are represented by paint and string erupting around an abstract dreadnought engulfed in its own environment.

Dates: August 5 to September 29, 2010
Closing Reception: Thursday, September 16, 2010 @ 7:00 PM at the Window Space

Where: The +15 Window Space is located on the second level of the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts at 205-8 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB. The closing reception for Battleship will run from 7 to 8 PM at the window space.

The reception and show will be open to the public. Attendance is free.

Life in the 2 Field
Sep 10 to Oct 07
TRUCK Contemporary Art presents:

Life in the 2 field

SHOWCASING WORK BY

Robyn Moody (Calgary, AB)

Life in the 2 field will turn TRUCK's main gallery into a living drawing. In drawn animation, there are a number of different fields used for different effects. In a small field - the # 2 field, small differences in successive drawings are amplified when enlarged or projected on a large screen. Lines delineating a room, for example, have a tendency to wave wildly. Simple mechanical cams and levers will be used to initiate waves in the cords, animating the "drawing" of the room.

Dates: September 10 to October 7, 2010
Opening reception: Friday, September 10, 2010 @ 8:00 PM in the Main Space
Where: TRUCK Contemporary Art, 815 First Street SW, lower level of the Grain Exchange Building

Journey Through Fire - Firewalking with Gurutropolis
Sep 25, Nov 13
Gurutropolis is pleased to invite you to do what is possible... Firewalk.
Firewalking is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers, coals or stones. It has a long history in many cultures as a test or proof of faith.
In just one eight-hour seminar, you can discover your inner strength, power and confidence. Journey with Gurutropolis through the fire, and you'll discover an exhilarating world where anything is possible. You'll be guided through overcoming your fears, building your inner strength and finally, after a calm and confident walk across the red-hot coals, claiming the life of your dreams on the other side! You will profoundly understand that you can do anything you want...
Come join us for an adventure you will never forget. There are only 50 spaces available for this incredible, life-transforming seminar. Get your ticket now!

Please Note: There are risks when doing firewalking improperly, which is why we have trained experts to prepare you for your journey. The main hazards are burning your feet if:
a) you remain in the fire too long which enables the thermal conductivity of the coals to catch up OR
b) you run through the coals (running pushes one's feet deeper and is not recommended).

Harvest Pumpkin Hunts
Oct 02 to Oct 03, Oct 09 to Oct 10, Oct 16 to Oct 17, Oct 23 to Oct 24, Oct 30 to Oct 31
Off we go on the tractor-pulled hay wagon, rolling through the crunchy fall leaves just hoping to find some... kid-sized pumpkins! Once we find some, we'll bring them back and decorate them into creative pumpkin-head masterpieces! While the glue sets up, everyone can have a visit with their favorite animal friends in the farmyard. It's harvest fun at it's best! This makes one of those 'parties to remember'! And of course, all the children have their wonderful pumpkin to take home!
Be sure to dress for the weather and bring along the camera to catch the expressions of delight and discovery!
And... wear something orange to celebrate the spectacular fall season!

Timing?? ....the hunt and decorating usually take 40 - 50 minutes, and then whatever time you'd like to spend in the farmyard.....we see most folks spend 1.5 to 2 hours with us. You must be here at least 15 minutes before your hunt so we have everyone together so the hunts can run on time.

Cutting horse competitions got their start in the Wild West, where a good cutting horse was invaluable to ranchers when they were working the cattle herds. Now, cutting is one of the world’s fastest growing equine sports with competitions all over North America. In fact, the Calgary Stampede Cutting Horse Futurity presented by Wrangler is one of the highest profile ones. From October 13 through 17 the top open and non-professional riders will be in Calgary with their horses in tow. The focus of the event are the Futurity classes – those limited to 3 year old horses – and includes high level competitions for all ages of horses as they advance through their training. There is a lot of money up for grabs – over $300,000 in cash and awards.

NOMADS - France Jodoin
Oct 21 to Nov 20
"Nomads" will feature new works by France Jodoin. Jodoin has an exceptionally popular legacy of beautifully impassioned paintings.

The artist's work is inspired by her own reflections of time an space and has in the past portrayed abstracted seascapes that are both whimsical and richly theatrical.

The artist says she is looking "to create a recognizable but imaginary geography, focusing on the large and small spaces that exist between the sea and sky that suggest infinity."

BD&P Worl Music Series - Spanish Harlem Orchestra with special guests Septeto Nacional
Oct 27

Grammy award-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra is the standard bearer for contemporary Latin music, delivering sizzling salsa guaranteed to get you out of your seat! With five-part horns and precision percussion, the harmonies of this 13-member ensemble of ace musicians make it impossible not to join the party on the dance floor!

Their beats will take you back to those warm summer nights as the soundtrack to a hot Latin party with their distinctive New York Latin sound. The Los Angeles Times calls them “a forceful, finely tuned ensemble of alumni from the great salsa bands of Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades and others.”

The show opens with a spicy Cuban appetizer with Septeto Nacional who is without a doubt, the most universal and classic Son band in Cuba today. Son is a fusion of Spanish guitar and song with percussion of African origin which gained worldwide popularity in the 1930s. If you like the sounds of Buena Vista Social Club, you will be seduced by the classic rhythms of the “ambassadors of the Cuban folklore”, Septeto Nacional.

Spanish Harlem Orchestra with Septeto Nacional is a lively introduction to EPCOR CENTRE’s 2010-11 season of exceptional international music.

Performance begins at 7:30pm Tickets: $49 - $62

A journey through Africa, the Appalachians, Siberia and beyond. This evening promises to be nothing short of extraordinary, and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Béla Fleck is arguably the best banjo player in the world, being nominated for Grammys in jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, spoken word, Christian, composition and world music categories. The Alash Ensemble is a quartet of throat singers from Tuva, a tiny republic in Siberia. Using their throats, lips and mouths, the Alash Ensemble creates a range of notes, including melodies and harmonic overtones, that are used to imitate sounds of nature.

In this unique performance, East-meets-West to perform some of the most beloved seasonal songs of all time; it is a trip through musical and personal history, a story of culture and mysticism, revival and preservation— this is Béla Fleck and the Flecktones with The Alash Ensemble.

Soundasaurus Experimental Music Festival
Jan 20 to Jan 22
Take new media technologies: sound, video and net art, installations, compositions and performances… mix liberally with super-cool dinosaurs and a dash of experimental goodness.

Soundasaurus is an organized cacophony of experimental music, sound, performance and visual art. This is a multisensory, three-day festival rocking the centre in conjunction with the High Performance Rodeo.

Bigger than Albertosaurus, bolder than a buckin’ bronco, beefier than a prairie steer. It’s an experience to sink your saber teeth into—rarer than a wooly mammoth and bigger than the badlands—SOUNDASAURUS rocks… and roars.

Performance times 7:30 pm.

BD&P World Music Series - India Calling: An Evening with Kiran Ahluwalia and Rhythm of Rajasthan
Jan 29
Steamy evenings of saffron-coloured sunsets, flavours of sweet mango and sour tamarind, rich scarlet silks and glittering gold adornments; this is a country lush with history and culture from the banks of the Ganges to the Himalayan mountains. Journey through villages, temples, jungles and plains; this is India Calling: An Evening with Kiran Ahluwalia and Rhythm of Rajasthan.
Kiran Ahluwalia sings of those experiences which unite us all; love, loss, celebration, spiritualism and divine joy. Her music is inspired by ghazals— ancient poetic forms— and Punjabi folk songs. She brings intricate, unique artistry and blazing passion with her sensuous music.
Tales of heroes and villains, lovers and fighters, myths and legends come to life through Rhythm of Rajasthan’s inspired music. A group of folk musicians and dancers of western Rajasthan, India, Rhythm of Rajasthan celebrates traditional songs and melodies through their unique musical style coupled with dance.
It promises to be a night lush with music and artistry from a country renowned for fantastic and dazzling history, culture and spectacle. Spicy as vindaloo, breathtaking as a Bengal tiger and more exotic than a trip to the Taj Mahal, experience India Calling: An Evening with Kiran Ahluwalia and Rhythm of Rajasthan.

Performance begins at 7:30pm

It is intense, passionate and wild with a constant threat of losing control, barely held back by a strict rhythmic structure. Yet, it ignites a fever in those who listen. It is Flamenco, the signature musical style of Spain, a musical genre whose history is mysterious and debated, yet is undeniably powerful and timeless.

BD&P World Music Series presents one of the world’s best Flamenco guitarists—Paco Peńa—in his A Compás! (Primal Pulse) Tour.

From the parched southern Spanish province of Andalucia, rose the origins of Flamenco; to aficionados, the heart of the Flamenco is the song, accompanied by other aspects such as the famous Flamenco dances and claps.

In A Compás!, the essential element is the unstoppable pulse of the Flamenco rhythm, accompanied by mesmerizing dance. With a highly impressive record of playing venues throughout the world and captivating international audiences, Paco Peńa promises fiery displays, stunning precision and boundless passion.

Performance begins at 7:30pm
Tickets: $51 - $66

BD&P World Music Series - Johnny Clegg: SPIRIT IS THE JOURNEY – THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
Apr 23
Music has immense power; while it is both a cultural exploration and celebratory exaltation, music is a tremendous force for social change, justice and holds the power to change history. Our 2010-11 BD&P World Music Series concludes with a man whose music has reached beyond stereos and commercial appeal—and helped change the course of a country and swayed hearts.

Johnny Clegg is a legend in South Africa, famous for both campaigning against apartheid in South Africa and creating internationally successful fusions of traditional Zulu rhythms with western melodies.

Johnny Clegg’s music not only celebrates African culture, it opens a dialogue for political discussion and, perhaps most importantly, is simply fantastic. Selling over 5 million albums with his ground-breaking groups, Juluka and Savuka, for the past 30 years, Clegg’s music and message have made him an international superstar. EPCOR CENTRE welcomes Johnny Clegg for the season finale to our BD&P World Music Series; celebrate, laugh and dance in the aisles—you won’t be able to stay in your seat for this once-in-lifetime concert!

Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Heel n Wheel-a-thon
TBA
The Calgary Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada is presenting its annual Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a-Thon.
The goal is to raise money for research and to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which together are known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Approximately 1 in 160 Canadians are affected by IBD. Canada is believed to have one of the highest rates of IBD in the world. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common forms of IBD. Crohn’s disease involves inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract, while ulcerative colitis involves only the large bowel. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both chronic illnesses. They are painful, and can be socially isolating due to the “embarrassment factor.

The Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a-Thon is our twist on the walk-a-thon theme. Participants of all ages can walk, run, bike, in-line skate or even walk their dog... anything involving their heels or wheels!
