Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports, is an exhibition about contemporary art that deals with the subject of the male athlete. This particular artistic theme has become increasingly prevalent during the past several years, building upon several decades of discourse about identity and gender. Including artists ranging from such well-known individuals as Matthew Barney, Catherine Opie, Collier Schorr, and Sam Taylor-Wood to emerging talents such as Shaun El C. Leonardo and Joe Sola, Mixed Signals demonstrates that the male athlete is a far more ambiguous, polyvalent figure in our collective cultural imagination than ever before.

/RECEPTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2010. 7PM - 8PM.
/DETAILS This photographic blog project explores the idea of blurred boundaries and reflects the nature of my own identity as the product of both rural and urban influences. Restless and sometimes fearful in the city, yet overwhelmed by feelings of isolation in rural areas, I often feel unsettled in my own hometown. This past spring, I repeatedly traveled to the “borderlands” of Calgary to explore regions where rural and urban living seem to overlap. With this project, my goal is to inspire conversation around the idea of borderlands in Calgary and elsewhere, and to invite conversation about notions of identity, roots and “home.”

Randy Niessen’s site specific installations are formal explorations created through a hybrid of painting, print media, and sculpture. These installations play with the tension between art and environment, materials and space, as well as reality and illusion. In the abstract of a sinking ship, Battleship Down is an explosive scene of geometric shapes and colour. Fire, water, and light are represented by paint and string erupting around an abstract dreadnought engulfed in its own environment.
