This Installation offers the viewer a glimpse of both the artifice in cinema and the construction of representation in art practice. The viewer brackets causal explanation and analysis to experience the total effect of the work, including the cinematic narrative of their own presence within the process. The gap between Turriff’s artistic intention and the performative aspects of the installation enacted by the audience provides a space in which the viewer may (re)introduce meaning and interpretation of/for the installation. In participating, the viewer claims a place in an old growth forest, however fictive.

/BIO
Robert Turriff is currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia. He graduated in 2009 from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. Turriff’s artwork is situated at the intersection of art and craft, informed by his experience as a film industry technician and as an artist.

Even though this work is influenced by the excellent writings of Mira Schor, Lawrence Weschler, Leo Steinberg, Hannah Higgins and W.J.T. Mitchell, it remains theoretically unsound (and that's no reflection of anything but me and my own work). I'm indebted to many painters and photographers: some of these are obvious, but Dona Nelson and Larry Glawson are two who could slip by unnoticed. My roundabout thinking began with consideration of the simple paradox that is a stereo photograph and was then led to other more un-resolve-able, funny and worrisome thoughts.

Description: Take an epic global journey in search of the secrets of our distant past. Since 2005 Spencer Wells, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and director of the Genographic Project, has led a team of scientists in collecting hundreds of thousands of DNA samples from participants around the world. Wells is creating a detailed, genetically-based map of human migration, using clues in our own cells to show how modern humans came to populate the planet after leaving the cradle of Africa some 60,000 years ago. In Wells’ fascinating report on the Project’s findings, illustrated with images and video of his travels around the globe, you’ll retrace humanity’s first tentative steps away out of our African homeland…to the peopling of Asia, Europe, and the Americas…to the complex ethnic and cultural tapestry that humans have woven around the planet. An entertaining and engaging presenter who can uncover the stories hidden beneath mountains of data, Wells will show how our latest scientific tools are providing us with new answers to some of our oldest questions: where did we come from, and how did we get to where we live today?

John began performing stand up comedy at the age of nineteen. In his first few years, John starred in a national comedy special, won the Just for Laughs Home Grown Comedy Competition, finished in the finals of the Seattle International Comedy Competition, and shot two more Canadian stand-up specials for Canadian national television. All before the age of 25. John went on to win the Corner Gas Comedy contest. Giving him $10 000, and an appearance on Corner Gas with his mentor Brent Butt. He has opened for the likes of Dennis Miller, Brent Butt, Joan Rivers, Martin Short, Zach Galifianakis, and Craig Ferguson to name a few. Cholesterol is a topic we often hear about, but are Canadian women paying attention to their number? Many women are quick to put their own needs aside for the benefit of others. Yet while their hearts are in the right place, their heart health may not be – and as result, one in three Canadian women die each year from heart disease and stroke. Reducing your risk can start with knowing your cholesterol number.

To help address this issue, Becel®, in its role as founding sponsor of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s The Heart Truth™ campaign, is offering free cholesterol screening tests.

An award winning host and comedian, Jebb Fink has spent the last 30 years performing in comedy clubs and specializing in corporate comedy. Born in Los Angeles, California and now living in Calgary, Alberta his life was the inspiration for the Gemini Award winning CBC comedy “An American in Canada.” In fact, Jebb’s life is the theme for most of his comedy. He credits his success as a comedian in Canada to living in a city with an International airport. It also helps that he lives there with his second wife and she refuses to move to the States. It is hard not to recognize Jebb Fink from eight years on the A-Channel’s Big Breakfast or more recently as the host of City – TV’s “Your City.” In addition to his local work, Jebb has also been the host of CBC’s Just for Laughs “All Access Pass”, a writer and performer with the Just for Laughs Festival, and a writer and performer for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, Edmonton Comedy Festival, Halifax Comedy and the Hub Cap Comedy Festival.When he is not on television he can be found hosting numerous events throughout North America or performing on cruise ships. It makes you wonder when he might find time to sleep

From the first time he stepped on stage, it was only 9 short months later Kelly Taylor was headling. In just his second year of comedy Kelly shocked the comedy industry by placing second in the prestigious Just for Laughs Homegrown competition. Competing against comics who have been in the business for ten plus years, Kelly Taylor firmly made his mark at JFL. His performance did not go unnoticed as creative heads from NBC Universal, Happy Gilmore Productions and Jimmy Kimmel quickly approached with interest. Later that year Kelly started touring Canadian Colleges, and was Named Canadian College Comedian of the year. Already conquering Canada he has now moved on to being one the busiest comedians on the American college scene. Kelly Also starred as the lead role in the movie Sure Shot Dombrowski. Kellys ability to headline clubs, corporate, and college events with six years experience into his budding career is evidence that this kid is the real deal. Aside from Just for Laughs, he has already appeared at The Vancouver and Halfax Comedy Festivals. Kelly has performed all across the country including LA and New York City at some of the most well respected clubs in the industry. So catch him while you can! Kelly Taylor - Saskatchewan’s second best export after wheat.

Where products are made in the factory, brands are created in the mind; and, Kara Claypool has managed to help develop distinctive branding - twice. With a financial background, she grew from junior accountant to senior manager of finance and strategic planning at Big Rock Brewery, before embarking on her present mission as Senior Vice President at Jugo Juice. What generates her success? It’s two-pronged: her forward–thinking vision combined with believing wholeheartedly in her product. With her passion, Jugo Juice increased its sales by 138% and opened 80 new stores in just five years. Join us on March 15th as Kara Claypool’s shares her tips on building brands – and businesses – that stand apart.

The evening will be accompanied by complimentary wine & hors d’oeuvres, some great door prizes from our sponsors, and each guest will receive a gift bag!

The Calgary Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada is presenting its annual Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a-Thon.
The goal is to raise money for research and to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which together are known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Approximately 1 in 160 Canadians are affected by IBD. Canada is believed to have one of the highest rates of IBD in the world. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common forms of IBD. Crohn’s disease involves inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract, while ulcerative colitis involves only the large bowel. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both chronic illnesses. They are painful, and can be socially isolating due to the "embarrassment factor".

The Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a-Thon is our twist on the walk-a-thon theme. Participants of all ages can walk, run, bike, in-line skate or even walk their dog... anything involving their heels or wheels!

This years event will take place at Fish Creek Park.

The idea of the Francophone Multicultural Festival of Calgary arises of two reasons:

1. Cultural

A community that tries to keep its French roots, the authorities' determination to enhance and promote the mosaic and specific cultural heritage is an obvious element that has for now found an echo in Calgary in connection with the wealth of a cultural heritage likely unique in Canada.

2. Visibility

To show our culture to others but also learn to be ourself, be aware of its strength, come together to build, to legitimize ourself, share with others our values and our cultural diversity. This year festival will include the following activities:

1. Multi-arts pavilions run by artisans from Francophone countries and living in Calgary (EX: Algeria, Burundi, Congo, France, Haiti, Vietnam, Mauritius, Quebec, etc.);

2. Food kiosks to showcase the culinary delights of the Francophones (EX: Quebec, France, Haiti and Africa);

3. Kid's Corner: This area will be presented in collaboration with the SPEFSA and Centre de Ressources Francothèque. It will include: Inflatable games, professional makeup artist (face painting) and storytelling for younger;

4. The artistic program: Francophone artists from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and an international group artist. Emphasis will be on local artists.

5. Francophone Resources: A special area will be present to the public to discover French-language services available in Calgary. (Ex: School Boards, Francophone organizations based in Calgary, Ethnocultural associations, etc.)

Shoes and lunch will be provided, so all you have to do is register as an individual, create your own team or join an existing team and come strut your stuff. This is a donation-based event with no registration fee. The recommend goal per participant is $1,000 which will help us to reach our goal of $300,000 that much faster.

In fact, the Calgary Stampede Cutting Horse Futurity presented by Wrangler is one of the highest profile events. Off we go on the tractor-pulled hay wagon, rolling through the crunchy fall leaves just hoping to find some... kid-sized pumpkins! Once we find some, we'll bring them back and decorate them into creative pumpkin-head masterpieces! While the glue sets up, everyone can have a visit with their favorite animal friends in the farmyard. It's harvest fun at it's best! This makes one of those 'parties to remember'! And of course, all the children have their wonderful pumpkin to take home!
Be sure to dress for the weather and bring along the camera to catch the expressions of delight and discovery!
And... wear something orange to celebrate the spectacular fall season!

Timing?? ....the hunt and decorating usually take 40 - 50 minutes, and then whatever time you'd like to spend in the farmyard.....we see most folks spend 1.5 to 2 hours with us. You must be here at least 15 minutes before your hunt so we have everyone together so the hunts can run on time.
