The New Gallery is pleased to present "I Never Recognized Her Except in Fragments” by Hannah Doucet.

Opening reception is Friday, July 8 at 8:00 PM.

Exhibition runs from July 8 to August 6, 2016. Admission is free and all are welcome.
___

“Sometimes I recognized a region of her face, a certain relation of nose and forehead, the movement of her arms, her hands. I never recognized her except in fragments, which is to say that I missed her being, and that therefore I missed her altogether. It was not she, and yet it was no one else… I was struggling among images partially true, and therefore totally false.” – Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida, 1981

“I Never Recognized Her Except in Fragments” looks at images of women; both private and public, and particularly those within mainstream media outlets. Most of what Doucet sees are fragmented women – distorted bodies, recognizable as what they are, but only through the summation of their parts. Within this body of work, Doucet probes these tropes of fragmentation and distortion that she observes in contemporary culture.

The Festival will display Turkish art, folk dance, music and gourmet food, where visitors will get an opportunity to celebrate, learn, and savour Turkish hospitality, culture, heritage and cuisine.

Visitors will be able to browse and buy Turkish products, souvenirs and handcrafts, participate in activities for children, view many authentic demonstrations and performances, sample Turkish cuisine, and do much, much more at the Festival.

The world famous Turkish doner was the center piece of the Turkish Kitchen, served to over 4000 people. The stage was busy with Turkish folklore, music, dances and lovely Turkish songs. From handcrafts to pottery, jewelry to carpets, marbling to calligraphy, Turkish coffee to baklava, it was as if the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul was brought to Calgary. Kids were also having fun at their corner with moonwalk, face painting, crafts, portraits, and of course cotton candy and popcorn.

This wonderful event effectively brings Turkey to Calgary, showcasing a rich cultural heritage while allowing visitors to sample fine Turkish cuisine from sumptuous kabobs to mouth-watering pastries. This year, like last, the Festival will be alive with the sights, sounds and aromas of Turkey. Visitors are encouraged not to come to the festival alone, but to bring their family, friends, and neighbors, too. Come and sample authentic Turkish food and pastries while enjoying original Turkish-style doner-kabobs, tantuni- kabobs, shish-kabobs and famous pita-style sandwiches, along with gozleme and bazlama, featuring tasty, lightly spiced chicken or beef.

Taste the most delectable delights this side of Istanbul, along with authentic Turkish salads and a wide variety of other meals and baked goods. In addition, this year's Festival will feature unique and fascinating demonstrations of distinctive traditional Turkish crafts, such as paper marbling by Ebru Sanati, and carpet weaving. Truly, this is a day not to be missed, explosion of taste and culture in the heart of the summer, in the heart of Calgary.

The Tour of Alberta Ride the Road tour is a public bike ride in Calgary that kicks off the Tour of Alberta. There are a total of four rides that are perfect for both advanced cyclists and families. This year's ride, as in previous years, affords an opportunity to enjoy cycling in a group or with your family under traffic-free conditions. Participants will be able to discover cycling and feeling completely safe on Calgary roads.

There are two feeder rides from north and south Calgary to Stanley Park followed by a children's ride and the main public bike ride. The suburban spoke rides are inbound only while the main hub ride around downtown Calgary and the children's ride are a circuit. The north and south spoke rides are restricted to adults and young adults on geared bikes.

Children under ten years old lead the Hub ride out of Stanley Park then return on their own 2 km route. Children ten and older as well as everyone else are welcome on the main Hub ride. The main family Hub ride is about 40 minutes at a leisurely pace from Stanley Park (4011 1A St SW) looping around downtown Calgary.

You can cycle on roads without traffic that will feel completely safe thanks to Calgary Police Service rolling closure. However, the motorcycle police escorts support the North Spoke Ride from Tuxedo Source for Sports (2520 Centre St N) and the Hub Ride from Stanley Park. The South Spoke Ride from Shawnessy YMCA (333 Shawville Blvd SE) is unescorted by police. Only experienced cyclists and adults, comfortable riding on the road, should sign up for this ride. You will ride as a group and obey all rules of the road. There is an elevation gain as the peloton departs Fish Creek Park through the suburb of Canyon Meadows. Participants should be confident of their abilities.

A family registration is for four people - two parents and two children or one parent and three children. There is no charge for children six years old and under. Parents of young children are encouraged to bring child trailers for the family ride.

Both spoke rides arrive in Stanley Park at approximately the same time. In the park there will be live music, children's activities (free ice cream for registered participants), food truck and bike displays.

An amazing annual showcase of makers, local innovation and creativity in Calgary--and one of the best ways to experience the energy of the Maker Movement, the 2015 edition of the Calgary Mini Maker Faire takes place on September 12 and 13 (Sat & Sun) at TELUS Spark from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

We're very excited to be back at TELUS Spark again this year, sharing creativity and imagination with everyone who walks through the door. It's two fun-filled days exploring all the cool projects that often stay hidden away in basements, garages, barns and makerspaces. This event teases out all that creativity and showcases the passion of the people who build these marvellous things. Expect to leave inspired and amazed.

A sample of things to expect at this year's Faire:

Webby award-winning and Emmy-nominated EepyBird (of Coke & Mentos YouTube fame) will be returning as our headline act. You'll be able to make and fire a paper rocket high into the air. You'll be able to shoot drones that when hit release balls of fire into the air. There'll also be opportunities to learn how to dye, batt, and spin wool, to solder, control robots, laser cut your own name tag, and take part in countless other immersive activities.

Your Calgary Mini Maker Faire admission gains you access to not just our original Mini Maker Faire programming, but access to all the regular TELUS Spark exhibits and hands-on areas as well. With over 100+ exhibits, workshops, panel discussions, speaker presentations and other activities to see and participate in, you'll want to attend both days to fit it all in!

The YWCA Walk A Mile in Her Shoes fundraising event helps women and their children take steps to walk away from family violence. Although family violence is a very serious matter, this is a fun and light-hearted event. On event day join local celebrities and other concerned men by strapping on high heels to find out what it is like to "Walk A Mile in Her Shoes." Shoes and lunch will be provided, so all you have to do is register as an individual, create your own team or join an existing team and come strut your stuff. Only men can register to participate, however we know from experience that women play a huge part in this event by encouraging men to take part, assisting them in fundraising to reach their goal and cheering them on during the event.

This is a donation-based event with no registration fee. The recommend goal per participant is $1,000 which will help us to reach our goal of $300,000 that much faster.

So join us from 11am to 2pm at Olympic Plaza to “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes!”

Tough guys, it's time to "STEP UP"...into a pair of heels!

YWCA WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® is an annual fundraising event which raises money to support the work the YWCA of Calgary does to break the cycle of family violence and help keep women and their children safe.

Although family violence is a very serious matter, this fun and light-hearted event asks registered male participants to take a stand against family violence, strap on a pair of heels and walk two laps around Olympic Plaza.

Only men can participate in the walk, but women play a huge role in this event by encouraging and challenging the men in their lives to register and fundraise for the YWCA of Calgary.

The YWCA WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® fundraising event:

- Helps women and their children walk away from family violence.
- Is a donation-based event with no registration fee. Register as an individual, create your own team or join an existing team. Only registered participants who have fundraised are eligible to walk.
- Has a recommended goal per participant of $1,000, which will help us to reach our goal of $500,000. Donations can be made to a specific walker, to a team or to the event itself. Ask family, friends and co-workers to support you. Visit our Fundraising Tips for "Seven Quick Steps" to $1,000.

One of the world’s most original and eclectic spectacles of art, science and engineering, will erupt this September 16-20 when the third annual Beakerhead hits the streets and venues of Calgary, Alberta.

Look for mechanical creatures, multi-story art installations, famous and soon-to-be famous scientists and inventors, and performances by people and machines.

The dose of quirky spectacle that is coming to be associated with this annual five-day event will include more than 60 events, including:
• Station B: The hub and “playground for human ingenuity” at Fort Calgary, with a larger-than-life (fits 400 comfortably!) sandbox, and The Claw, a massive 30‐foot high version of the arcade-style crane game. Open daily from September 16 to 20.
• A String (Theory) of Incredible Encounters: A sequence of public engineered artworks from 17th Avenue SW, Inglewood, Victoria Park, East Village to Kensington and Downtown Calgary. Open daily from September 16 to 20.
• Opening Night: An outdoor musical kick‐off at Fort Calgary with GZA, science advocate and rapper with the Grammy‐nominated group Wu-Tang Clan, on Wednesday, September 16.
• The Gorgeous Molecule: A sublime food and cocktail lab experience in the historic Barron Building, on Thursday, September 17.
• Four-to-Six: Encounters with creative and somewhat nerdy buskers on Stephen Avenue Walk after work and school on Wednesday, September 16 to Friday, September 18 of Beakerhead.
• Engineered Eats: Restaurants across the city delighting you with the science of eggs. Foam-topped gimlet, anyone? Daily from September 16 to 20.
• Rock n’ Roll History of Space Exploration: The international premiere of a live visual and musical journey through space exploration! Two shows, Thursday, September 17 and Friday, September 18.
• Beakernight: A massive street spectacle on a four‐block stretch of 10 Ave SW with fire-erupting skee ball, rocket ship crane rides, 3D projection musical parties and hands‐on encounters with technology, on Saturday, September 19.

These cultural encounters with science and engineering are brought to life by more than 100 collaborators. Check beakerhead.com for the full rosters of free and ticketed events.

Rock the House Run™ presented by Apache is Calgary’s favourite run with entertainment along the route. Liberate your inner rock star while racing past bands, jugglers and belly dancers (we told you it was awesome). When you participate in Rock the House Run™, you’re helping sick children and their families stay together at Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta – that makes you kind of a big deal. So on September 21, join over 1,500 Calgarians at Market Mall as they run or walk for Ronald McDonald House, without even being chased.

What you need to know:
• Rock the House Run™ is fun experienced runners and the entire family
• You can rock out in the 10K & 5K run, 5K walk or the 1K McDonald's Go Active walk (perfect for little legs)
• Funds raised at the run directly support out-of-town families staying at Ronald McDonald House – awesome, eh?

Note: We promise to not throw colour at you, resulting in dry mouth and sore eyes. We also won’t make you crawl through muddy water or encourage you to run in your underwear (although you could if you want). You will also not be asked to run in the dark, looking for neon lights. You will however feel like a total rock star running for sick kids and their families staying at Ronald McDonald House. Plus there’ll be live entertainment along the route – now that rocks.

This event will be a celebration of the gifts that multiculturalism brings to all, and an opportunity to further strengthen ties within the arts community.

The more diverse Calgary becomes, the more we need cultural education in our community. We believe there is a need for further understanding and appreciation of the richness and diversity of cultures within Africa. The Annual Calgary Seniors Walk will take place on Stephen Avenue Mall in support of The Golden Age Club. This unique walk event will take place during the lunch hour and cover four blocks on Stephen Avenue Mall in Downtown Calgary with the goal to raise awareness and much needed funds for The Golden Age Club. The Golden Age Club offers a variety of social, recreational, health and outreach programs for Calgary's seniors' population.

The Annual Calgary Seniors Walk will consist of a walk like no other and feature walkers of all ages and backgrounds. Individual walkers over the age of sixty-five, individual walkers under the age of sixty-five and corporate teams will be coming together to celebrate the contributions older adults make to our city. The Annual Calgary Seniors Walk will include a unique twist - with all walkers under the age of sixty-five having to walk the event route balancing an egg on a spoon – signifying the difficulties many seniors have getting around day to day.

All walkers who participate in the Annual Calgary Seniors Walk will raise pledges in support of The Golden Age Club and have a minimum of $20 entry fee to the event. Prizes will be given for the most money raised by an individual under the age of sixty-five, most money raised by an individual over 65, most money raised by a team and the walker who crosses the finish line first with their egg unbroken.

It is estimated that over 1,000 walkers will participate in the Annual Calgary Seniors Walk and we anticipate thousands more will watch this unique event as our walkers dawn their bright yellow t-shirts and make their way through Stephen Avenue Mall with their eggs balancing on their spoons. The event is being designed to not only raise funds – but raise awareness for our seniors.

A Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground:
The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle.

RSVP by October 23, 2015 to njmackie@ucalgary.ca

On October 31, 1944, the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade was ordered to force a crossing over the Walcheren Causeway and establish a foothold on the eastern flank of Walcheren Island. Only 40 yards wide and stretching 1,200 yards with sodden reed-grown mudflats on either side the causeway was a deadly killing ground. An attempted advance up the gunbarrel straight causeway by the Black Watch was shredded. On the night of October 31, the Calgary Highlanders stepped out into the open in a valiant effort that won a shallow bridgehead on the far end that the Germans fiercely counterattacked throughout the ensuing day. Author Mark Zuehlke’s 2015 Ross Ellis Memorial Lecture, A Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground: The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle, pays tribute to the regiment’s gallantry and also the key role that Major Ross Ellis played in this battle.

The Rocky Mountain Rally is Canada's high altitude car rally!
Held in Kananaskis Country, this is a fun spectator friendly event. Bring your lawn chairs, a cooler, some bug spray, and a few friends, and enjoy a day outdoors watching Canada's top rally drivers zoom by!
Rally car racing is a popular spectator sport throughout Europe and North America. It is the only sport where people will find real cars, on real roads, going real fast. The addition of rally to the well known X-Games in the U.S. has recently made the sport jump in popularity. The Rocky Mountain Rally is Round 2 of the Canadian Rally Championship, a series televised on TSN/RDI across Canada.
