8:00pm every FIRST Saturday of the month from Oct 2016-Apr 2017

One Lions explores the metaphorical and metaphysical spaces that exist in all relationships. To put it another way, we take a dangerous longform improv journey. Like going on safari with ground beef in the trunk.

Tickets $10/$5 students, cash only at the door. The Kinkonauts Lab is located on the 2nd floor of the former Movie Poster Shop building (with King Kong). Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building.

Stephen Kent and Covy Holland, along with pianist Eric Nyland, create a harrowing story from a simple audience suggestion. The story moves backwards and forwards in time. Along the way creatures come out to play. Talking tigers, cheerleaders, pilots, Dr. Giraffe, Tommy Antelope Esq., your mother and your father. It’s your story we’re telling, if your story was directed by Wes Anderson and scored by the ghost of Chopin, the SCARY GHOST OF CHOPIN!

We are really excited to present 70 Acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green as part of our closing 2016/2017 Season, partnering with TURN - The Urban Research Network at U of Calgary, with director Ronit Bezalel in attendance!

Here's the synopsis:
Twenty-years in the making, 70 Acres in Chicago tells the story of the Cabrini Green public housing development located on the most hotly contested 70 acres of land in Chicago. With its prime central location, Cabrini Green was initially hailed as a public housing triumph, then more recently demonized as an urban disaster. It was demolished, bit and bit, beginning in 1995, and repackaged as a “mixed income” development. The mainly black residents of Cabrini were forced out, though there is still a remnant of Cabrini in the row houses. The few residents who were able to move into the highly relegated mixed income settlement, are negotiating through an unwelcoming cultural territory. These encounters, between the former Cabrini residents, and the new white middle-class homeowners comprise the very real tensions of a newly constructed community in transition. The film uses personal stories, expert commentary, and informative history to celebrate the spirit of a unique community and to mourn its betrayal and destruction. (Synopsis: Gene Siskel Film Center)

We began filming in 1995, during the fiery protests to save public housing. We gained the trust of the residents and they began sharing their stories of a close-knit, complicated community. Our camera followed their struggle to remain, culminating in moving vans and wrecking balls.

In 2001, we released Voices of Cabrini to honor their struggle. That film was very successful in helping to create dialogue about issues of race, class, and housing. However the last line of that short film was… “the story continues…”

We were not done yet, nor were the residents, nor was the story that was unfolding. We continued to film.

70 Acres in Chicago is not about saving Cabrini. Instead, this film follows the redevelopment story over the following two decades, as families struggle with the impact of social engineering on their community and personal lives. By putting faces to the story of a mixed-income community, and documenting how people negotiate questionable political policy, the film provides a lens for analyzing the larger picture of economic and racial injustice. Yet it is the people of the Cabrini Green community that stay in sharp focus.

A startling case study into the making and destruction of one of Chicago’s most infamous public housing projects. – Tony Binns

1979
By Michael Healey
Directed by Miles Potter
This hilarious battle of wits is based on true events. The year is 1979, and our hero is Prime Minister Joe Clark: young, idealistic, and stubborn. He's in his office, deciding if he should put his first budget before Parliament. He knows that if he does he could lose everything. Everyone begs him not to do it: his wife, his colleagues… Brian Mulroney, Pierre Trudeau... They tell him he should pull some strings, make some deals. Compromise.
But like we said, he's stubborn.
This sparkling and rowdy political comedy is a hugely relevant debate about leadership and power.

We live in a world in which information is everywhere but facts are unclear, in which opinions are rampant but context is missing. How do we filter the din around us and focus on the trends and patterns that will reveal what is truly at issue? And once we have, how do we respond to those signals? These are the questions we’ll examine.

This timed trial challenges handlers and their stock dogs to move three sheep through a defined course and into a pen, in the fastest time. Keeping the sheep under control and on course can save valuable seconds.
The handler controls the dog, either through whistle or voice commands. The handler must stay in the circle until all the sheep have come through the chute. Time stops when all the sheep are in the pen and the gate is closed.

Love. So beautiful. So musical. So complicated. Although forbidden by fairy law, Iolanthe marries a mortal and is then banished from fairyland. Here in our human world, she bears a son; a lovely lad named Strephon, who falls head over heels and wants to marry Phyllis, who is, of course, desired by all the members of the House of Peers. When Phyllis sees Strephon embrace Iolanthe, who is ethereal and lovely, she doesn’t stop for one moment to consider she might be Strephon’s mother and sets in motion a musical clash between politicians and fairies, sending everyone tripping hither, tripping thither – we did mention love can be complicated – it’s an energetic, satirical journey to the finale. Off and away to get your tickets! We’ll see you in Spring for this, the seventh of fourteen collaborations by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

Paddle Canada's Waterwalker Film Festival is a tribute to the late Bill Mason, the great conservationist, canoeist and filmmaker. Mason once stated, "The medium of film is for me a means of expressing my love and enjoyment of the natural world, and of sharing my concern for what's happening to it with anybody who looks and listens."

Mason's idea of success was to be able to communicate through his films, books and paintings the intense feelings he had for his surroundings, and to somehow inspire others into sharing and adopting these thoughts and concerns.

Passionate in his beliefs, always speaking from the heart, his films inspired many people to dedicate themselves to the enjoyment and conservation of Canada's wilderness and waterways.

The Calgary Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada is presenting its annual Gutsy Walk.
The goal is to raise money for research and to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which together are known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Approximately 1 in 160 Canadians are affected by IBD. Canada is believed to have one of the highest rates of IBD in the world. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common forms of IBD. Crohn’s disease involves inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract, while ulcerative colitis involves only the large bowel. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both chronic illnesses. They are painful, and can be socially isolating due to the "embarrassment factor".

It is with great pleasure that we, Tania and Vishal Malpuria of SPARQ PRODUCTIONS, invite you to their 7th Annual ONE – POWER OF WORLD DANCE to be held at the GREY EAGLE EVENT CENTRE on June 11th, 2016 starting at 7pm. Part proceeds to benefit the CANADIAN TRANSPLANT ASSOCIATION in support of Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness. This invitation is extended on behalf of all the outstanding performers who have come together to support this endeavor.

This year's event is very special to us. We have an important story to tell. On the day of last year's edition of ONE, May 23rd 2015, Vishal Malpuria, co-director of SPARQ PRODUCTIONS had a neuro stroke. With his already deteriorating heart, things started spirally downwards. He was put on the Transplant list and on Sept 27th 2015, our family was blessed with an angel donating his heart!!! The support to the CANADIAN TRANSPLANT ASSOCIATION is undoubtedly a choice that we have made for life, goiing forward. ORGAN & TISSUE DONATION SAVES LIVES and we need to get this awareness out there. Our humble request is to please share this event and make this a roaring success.

ONE – POWER OF WORLD DANCE promises an immense array of dynamic and visually stunning performances from some of ALBERTA’s most accomplished and promising artists. This exciting and unique presentation will showcase dances of Chinese Folk, Hip hop, Bollywood, Aerialists, Contemporary, Belly Dancing, Salsa and many more. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the performances of this evening will piece together seamlessly, all the while portraying a beautiful relationship between and amongst different genres and cultures. This unique show full of fascinating works of integrated dance forms will provide an opportunity for audiences to extend their horizons beyond the boundaries of their own culture and experience other cultures of the world.

SPARQ PRODUCTIONS is committed to professional artistic excellence through public performances and is working hard to raise the profile of integrated dance within the community, thus trying to provide dance opportunities for local artists.

In this endeavor to promote diversity and community involvement, Tania & Vish, are PROUD to donate part proceeds of this event to the CANADIAN TRANSPLANT ASSOCIATION in support of Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness.

COME EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF WORLD DANCE!!!!

Cyclepalooza is a volunteer-directed, community-based, bicycle-themed festival promoting arts, culture, events, and fun in Calgary. It was formed out of the desire among Calgary area cyclists to bring more publicity and interest to cycling and its positive impacts on communities, and to bring communities together through cycling.

Inspired by Portland’s Pedalpalooza and Vancouver’s Velopalooza, Cyclepalooza is 10 days of bike events and fun that occurs June 23rd to July 2nd.

Cyclepalooza operates on the same organizational model as Pedalpalooza and Velopalooza: A small committee of volunteers provides publicity and organizational support (and a couple of organized events). For the most part, however, the festival is run by individuals, groups, and businesses, who organize their own events. The Cyclepalooza calendar serves to advertise these events, and the Cyclepalooza committee and volunteer force promote the festival as a whole and assist with individual events. There aren’t that many of us, though, and no-one gets paid to do it. So initiative and engagement are welcome! Everyone can host an event, and you don’t need permission or approval to contribute an event to Cyclepalooza. See the Ride Guide for some suggestions on how to go about organizing an event, then add it to the calendar.

The Festival will display Turkish art, folk dance, music and gourmet food, where visitors will get an opportunity to celebrate, learn, and savour Turkish hospitality, culture, heritage and cuisine.

Visitors will be able to browse and buy Turkish products, souvenirs and handcrafts, participate in activities for children, view many authentic demonstrations and performances, sample Turkish cuisine, and do much, much more at the Festival.

The world famous Turkish doner was the center piece of the Turkish Kitchen, served to over 4000 people. The stage was busy with Turkish folklore, music, dances and lovely Turkish songs. From handcrafts to pottery, jewelry to carpets, marbling to calligraphy, Turkish coffee to baklava, it was as if the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul was brought to Calgary. Kids were also having fun at their corner with moonwalk, face painting, crafts, portraits, and of course cotton candy and popcorn.

This wonderful event effectively brings Turkey to Calgary, showcasing a rich cultural heritage while allowing visitors to sample fine Turkish cuisine from sumptuous kabobs to mouth-watering pastries. This year, like last, the Festival will be alive with the sights, sounds and aromas of Turkey. Visitors are encouraged not to come to the festival alone, but to bring their family, friends, and neighbors, too. Come and sample authentic Turkish food and pastries while enjoying original Turkish-style doner-kabobs, tantuni- kabobs, shish-kabobs and famous pita-style sandwiches, along with gozleme and bazlama, featuring tasty, lightly spiced chicken or beef.

Taste the most delectable delights this side of Istanbul, along with authentic Turkish salads and a wide variety of other meals and baked goods. In addition, this year's Festival will feature unique and fascinating demonstrations of distinctive traditional Turkish crafts, such as paper marbling by Ebru Sanati, and carpet weaving. Truly, this is a day not to be missed, explosion of taste and culture in the heart of the summer, in the heart of Calgary.

An amazing annual showcase of makers, local innovation and creativity in Calgary--and one of the best ways to experience the energy of the Maker Movement.

We're very excited to be back at TELUS Spark again this year, sharing creativity and imagination with everyone who walks through the door. It's two fun-filled days exploring all the cool projects that often stay hidden away in basements, garages, barns and makerspaces. This event teases out all that creativity and showcases the passion of the people who build these marvellous things. Expect to leave inspired and amazed.

A sample of things to expect at this year's Faire:

Webby award-winning and Emmy-nominated EepyBird (of Coke & Mentos YouTube fame) will be returning as our headline act. You'll be able to make and fire a paper rocket high into the air. You'll be able to shoot drones that when hit release balls of fire into the air. There'll also be opportunities to learn how to dye, batt, and spin wool, to solder, control robots, laser cut your own name tag, and take part in countless other immersive activities.

Your Calgary Mini Maker Faire admission gains you access to not just our original Mini Maker Faire programming, but access to all the regular TELUS Spark exhibits and hands-on areas as well. With over 100+ exhibits, workshops, panel discussions, speaker presentations and other activities to see and participate in, you'll want to attend both days to fit it all in!
