We live in a world in which information is everywhere but facts are unclear, in which opinions are rampant but context is missing. How do we filter the din around us and focus on the trends and patterns that will reveal what is truly at issue? And once we have, how do we respond to those signals? These are the questions we’ll examine.

Cyclepalooza is a volunteer-directed, community-based, bicycle-themed festival promoting arts, culture, events, and fun in Calgary. It was formed out of the desire among Calgary area cyclists to bring more publicity and interest to cycling and its positive impacts on communities, and to bring communities together through cycling.

Inspired by Portland’s Pedalpalooza and Vancouver’s Velopalooza, Cyclepalooza is 10 days of bike events and fun that occurs June 23rd to July 2nd.

Cyclepalooza operates on the same organizational model as Pedalpalooza and Velopalooza: A small committee of volunteers provides publicity and organizational support (and a couple of organized events). For the most part, however, the festival is run by individuals, groups, and businesses, who organize their own events. The Cyclepalooza calendar serves to advertise these events, and the Cyclepalooza committee and volunteer force promote the festival as a whole and assist with individual events. There aren’t that many of us, though, and no-one gets paid to do it. So initiative and engagement are welcome! Everyone can host an event, and you don’t need permission or approval to contribute an event to Cyclepalooza. See the Ride Guide for some suggestions on how to go about organizing an event, then add it to the calendar.

The world famous Turkish doner was the center piece of the Turkish Kitchen, served to over 4000 people. The stage was busy with Turkish folklore, music, dances and lovely Turkish songs. From handcrafts to pottery, jewelry to carpets, marbling to calligraphy, Turkish coffee to baklava, it was as if the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul was brought to Calgary. Kids were also having fun at their corner with moonwalk, face painting, crafts, portraits, and of course cotton candy and popcorn.

This wonderful event effectively brings Turkey to Calgary, showcasing a rich cultural heritage while allowing visitors to sample fine Turkish cuisine from sumptuous kabobs to mouth-watering pastries. This year, like last, the Festival will be alive with the sights, sounds and aromas of Turkey. Visitors are encouraged not to come to the festival alone, but to bring their family, friends, and neighbors, too. Come and sample authentic Turkish food and pastries while enjoying original Turkish-style doner-kabobs, tantuni- kabobs, shish-kabobs and famous pita-style sandwiches, along with gozleme and bazlama, featuring tasty, lightly spiced chicken or beef.

Taste the most delectable delights this side of Istanbul, along with authentic Turkish salads and a wide variety of other meals and baked goods. In addition, this year's Festival will feature unique and fascinating demonstrations of distinctive traditional Turkish crafts, such as paper marbling by Ebru Sanati, and carpet weaving. Truly, this is a day not to be missed, explosion of taste and culture in the heart of the summer, in the heart of Calgary.

Classical GuitarFest West

A week of ‘guitar immersion’ in the Southern Alberta foothills, guaranteed to excite and inspire young guitar students and emerging classical guitar performers aged 13 and older with a minium Grade 4 RCM.

The program focuses on developing solo performance skills through private lessons and open masterclasses, preparing the student for a performance at week’s end. Students also have the opportunity to observe faculty performances in three evening concerts during the week.

The week’s activities include daily ensemble coaching and students are encouraged to register as groups. Students who do not have a working ensemble may request to be placed in a group. All groups will receive coaching on interpretation and presentation, and performances that are sufficiently prepared will be programmed on the student recital.

Other activities include; ‘Finger Aerobics’, ‘Yoga for the practise room’ and a Flamenco workshop. Classes developed to help us remember how to have fun while developing good skills.

No self-respecting Classical Guitarist will want to miss this. Yee-haw!
