The McDougall Centre, circa 1906, originally served as the Calgary Normal School and was later changed to be a public school. It was designated as a historical site in 1982. The building also boasts a central dome that was designed to resemble the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The building is open daily. James Short Park & Cupola + My Favorites
Formerly the site of the James Short School, this small city park was created in 1991. A historic cupola on the corner supports an 1880s time piece and the structure showcases plaques and photographs of some of Calgary's original buildings. The park is also home to the semi-circular Sun Life Plaza Plus 15 Bridge which is part of the extensive Plus 15 Skywalk system. Address: Centre Street & 5th Ave. SW | Calgary, AB [ Map ]

At 190 metres (626 feet) in height, this was once the tallest building in Calgary's skyline. The Observation Terrace offers panoramic views of the city, and a glass floor allows visitors to stand 160 metres (525 feet) above the street. Also located at the top of the tower is a gift shop, Tops Bar and Grill and the revolving Panorama Dining Room, open for lunch and dinner. The tower and the observation deck are open daily. Completed in 1984, Petro-Canada Centre’s west tower is the tallest freestanding building in Western Canada. The building consists of 53 floors and stands 215 m (705 ft) tall. The east tower is 130 m (427 ft) tall and offers 33 floors. The set of towers is home to a range of companies and businesses including food retailers, medical services, and major corporations.
