Located on Signal Hill just west of Sarcee Trail, Battalion Park is an area dedicated to the commemoration of the First World War and the Canadian Forces that fought there. The park’s highlight is a series of gigantic numbers made up of about 16,000 large whitewashed stones located on the side of the hill.
The series of numbers correspond to four battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who fought in the war. The park also offers several interpretive displays throughout. Once forgotten and in threat of being removed, the area was finally restored and officially opened in November 1991.

Central Memorial Park + My Favorites
Calgary’s oldest park, Central Memorial Park is home to eight memorials including the Boer War equestrian statue and various others that commemorate both World Wars. Set aside for park space by the Federal Government in 1899, the park is also home to Alberta’s first public library. Rouleauville Square + My Favorites
Found in front if St. Mary’s Cathedral, Rouleauville Square marks the area that in 1899 was known as the Village of Rouleauville. The plaza is made up of 12 interpretive panels that describe the site as well as a sculptured brick mural that tells the story of Rouleauville. Address: 17 Ave & 1 St. SW | Calgary, AB [ Map ]
Firefighters and Police Officers Tribute Plaza + My Favorites
Unveiled in January 2006, this plaza stands in honour of Calgary’s firefighters and police officers who have lost their lives during duty. Located in front of the Municipal building at City Hall, the tribute consists of two monuments. The Walls of Memory features the history of the Police and Fire Services and represents strength and commitment while the Lantern of Light is a three-story tower featuring coloured glass that is illuminated at night. Calgary Cenotaph + My Favorites
Dedicated to soldiers who died during both World Wars, the Calgary Cenotaph is found in downtown’s Memorial Park and is the site for the traditional wreath laying ceremony during Remembrance Day celebrations. Address: 4th St. & 12th Ave SW | Calgary, AB [ Map ]
Peace Park + My Favorites
Peace Park opened in 1992 in celebration of Canada’s 125th birthday and as part of a national project to commemorate Canada’s peacemakers. Replacing two gravel parking lots along the Bow River, the park was one of 250 peace parks that opened throughout Canada that year. Peace Park features a large sandstone Memorial Arch at its entryway, erected in memory of the soldiers who died in both World Wars and the Korean War.
