Dining in the Calgary Area

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Calgary & Area, Alberta.
CITY OF CALGARY

The city of Calgary has long been known for its western hospitality and emphasis on country values. These qualities are evident in Calgary's authentic western restaurants. With characteristically rustic décor, Buzzards Cowboy Cuisine serves a series of regional dishes featuring 100 per cent Alberta beef.

Although Calgary has strong country roots, cowboy cuisine is definitely not the only food on the menu. The booming oil city has become a growing cosmopolitan hub, reflecting a medley of cultures. As a result, Calgary's restaurant sector has grown and diversified. There are so many choices when picking a restaurant to dine at. American, French, Italian, Japanese and Vietnamese food is just a small taste of the cuisines readily available in Calgary.

NORTH OF CALGARY

Located a few minutes from Calgary's northern outskirts, the city of Airdrie offers a range of restaurants that cater to hungry travellers and locals. There are a number of lively pubs and sports bars that offer daily specials. At Dick's Pub and Grill, Tuesday is toonie drink night and Wednesday features specials on wings.

For the most part, dining establishments in Airdrie are family friendly and feature a casual atmosphere. Ricky's is a pleasant Canadian franchise that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Smitty's serves breakfast all day long and also provides typical lunch and dinner items.

For food enthusiasts who crave international flavours, there is a selection of ethnic restaurants located in Airdrie, including Chinese, Greek and Indian.

SOUTH OF CALGARY

Okotoks is located 40 minutes by car from Calgary's downtown district. The growing town has an assortment of restaurants for patrons to choose from. It is worth the drive from Calgary to dine at Bistro Provence, where the French chef/owner has created an exciting and innovative menu.

If in the mood for pizza, there are a few places that offer dine-in and take-out service. Tom's House of Pizza specializes in thin-crust pizzas with yummy toppings like mushrooms, ham, shrimp, salami and chicken.

On Friday and Saturday nights at the Best of New Orleans customers can enjoy live jazz and blues music while savouring Creole and Cajun food favourites. For more locally inspired dishes there are some restaurants that focus on western cuisine. Rylie's Cattle Barn Cookhouse and Saloon offers typically Albertan choices, like burgers, steaks and ribs.

Twenty-two minutes west of Okotoks along Highway 7 visitors will find a couple of places to dine in the town of Black Diamond. The Wild Horse Bistro serves up seasonal cuisine for lunch and dinner, while the Black Diamond Hotel Restaurant and Bar offers daily specials, homemade soup and an extensive menu.

WEST OF CALGARY

Only a quick drive from Calgary's north-western city limits, Cochrane is situated along Highway 1A on the way to Canmore. Visiting historic sites around town and eating at an authentic western restaurant are ways to discover the tradition and personality of Cochrane. The Stageline Saloon is a genuine old-west saloon with authentic décor. Live country bands provide music every weekend and there is an outdoor deck for dining during the warm summer months.

But western cuisine is not all that Cochrane has to offer. There are plenty of cafes and other eateries around town. MacKay's Ice Cream is a well-known spot among locals. It is common for Calgarians to drive to Cochrane for a scoop of MacKay's sought-after specialty ice cream.

Half an hour south of Cochrane on Highway 22 travellers will find the hamlet of Bragg Creek. As a popular day-tripping destination, Bragg Creek is nestled in the foothills and is known for its scenery, quaint shops and restaurants. Buttercup Country Bakery is an old-fashioned bakery that produces all-time classics like Saskatoon berry pie, buttercream cupcakes and all sorts of cookies. At mealtime, the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Madrina's Ristorante provide fine dining experiences in Bragg Creek's picturesque country surroundings.
