Turner Valley Historic Sites & Interpretive Centres
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Historic Sites & Interpretive Centres in Turner Valley, Alberta.
Oil was discovered in this previously undeveloped part of Alberta back in 1914, changing the landscape and creating boom towns throughout the region. The Turner Valley Gas Plant, particularly the first oil well, Dingman No. 1, played a major role in the economic and social development of the area and has been designated a national historic site. Nicknamed Hell's Half Acre, the facility once lit up the night sky as the flames from the wells burned 24 hours per day. Tours of the plant are offered May through September and may be booked through the website.
